About EduMonitor
EduMonitor is a one-stop digital K-8 educational content library that provides teachers, parents, and schools, with standard-aligned resources to enhance existing curricula.
Constraints
Since this was for an Edtech Startup there wasn’t a lot of room in the budget for a thorough redesign. The client wanted a fast turnaround for his website redesign. We discussed time and he wanted the redesign done within a day or no more than 5 hours.
Design Process
- Problem Statement
- Research
- Wireframing Sketch
- High Fidelity Mockup
- Visual Design
Problem Statement
The stakeholder was unsatisfied with the initial design and wanted the website’s homepage to look more professional and appealing to parents, homeschoolers, and education professionals to help increase sales and traffic.
Competitive Analysis
I studied different Teacher Resources website homepages, analyzed their strengths and weaknesses, and the kind of design they have implemented. These companies have been very successful in the educational resource industry. Teacherspayteachers.com was the main competitor I used as design inspiration.

Key Takeaways from Competitive Analysis
- Almost all websites used big and bold typography
- 4-5 large and bold CTA buttons
- Consistent layout
- Intuitive Search bars
- Most displayed visuals or graphics of the resources being sold under the fold
Heuristic Evaluation

Problem Areas based on Heuristic Evaluation
- Cluttered top navigation menu
- Alignment issues throughout and padding inconsistencies in informational cards
- Inconsistent layout
- No visuals of resources being sold are displayed on the homepage
- Carousel of only 2 reviews
- A casual, informal font that is difficult to read

Sketch
I had a very short turnaround for the redesign, no more than 5 hours to be exact. Although I wanted to sketch out different layouts and create a low-fi wireframe there just wasn’t allowable time.

Redesign Goals
After defining the problem areas, the main goals of the website’s homepage redesign were established
- Reduced the number of items in navigation down to 4 to simplify and reduce cognitive overload
- Added grade level and subjects drop-down list to help parents and teachers quickly find relevant information for their children and students.
- Have a more consistent layout and obvious separation of different sections throughout the page so users knew where to find specific information. (2nd iteration)
- Display visuals of resources being sold so parents and teachers could see examples of the type of resources the company offers.
- Improved testimonial section with more reviews featured. The new design features 4 testimonials rather than the same 2 on a carousel.
- Above the fold was improved for readability and a graphic was chosen to reflect a student using a resource that was sold on the website. Also, another Price and Planning CTA button was added.
- Improved fonts and graphics. More formal fonts, improved icon layouts, and larger graphics were added. (2nd iteration)
- Improved and aligned footer. Footer is a more organized and easier-to-read font.

If more time was given, I would have
- Uploaded the website to Hotjar to learn how people are experiencing the product
- Communicated with users to ask about their pain points for finding resources on the website
- Drawn out more sketches of the homepage
- Created a low-fidelity prototype
- Done usability testing with teachers and parents
Reflections
I learned so much from this freelance work. I learned about performing under constraints. This was the first time a time limit was strictly set. My previous freelance work for a tutoring app was more lenient on time. I learned the importance of communication and feedback through the constant back and forth with the client. I also shared my work with a talented mentor and he really educated me on the UI. We focused on typography and layout with this project.
Some of the areas of growth, in general, are really explaining the ‘why’ of my design. What’s the purpose? Why did I make the changes I did? Why did I take away certain things and add certain things? I have a great mentor that helps me understand the ‘why’ of UX design decisions.
So although this work was a quick turnaround and I didn't do everything I wanted to, I felt the lessons I learned from continuing with the design were invaluable!
